Welcome to Goddess of the Moon Leatherworks Dismiss

Now that you know how to spot a gorgeous, high-quality full-grain leather piece, let’s talk about how most people accidentally destroy them.
They put them away for the season.😮
Leather is an organic material. It needs to breathe. When you trap it in the wrong environment, you invite two great enemies of the craft: mold and dry rot.
Here’s how to properly store your leather so it lasts a lifetime.
1. Never, Ever Use Plastic
• The Mistake: Leaving your leather jacket in the plastic bag from the dry cleaners or storing boots in airtight plastic tubs.
• The Danger: Plastic traps humidity. This creates a micro-greenhouse that breathes life right into dormant mold spores.
• The Alchemy: Use breathable cotton garment bags or old pillowcases. Air needs to circulate freely around the hide.

2. Guard the Geometry (Avoid the Sag)
• The Mistake: Hanging heavy leather jackets on thin wire hangers or tossing soft bags in a heap on the floor.
• The Danger: Leather has a “memory.” Wire hangers will create permanent, ugly dimples in the shoulders, and collapsed bags will permanently crease.
• The Alchemy: Use wide, wooden hangers for jackets. Stuff your bags and boots with acid-free tissue paper or uninked butcher paper to help them keep their shape.
3. The Atmosphere “Goldilocks Zone”
• The Mistake: Storing leather in damp, unfinished basements or boiling hot, unventilated attics.
• The Danger: Too much moisture equals mold. Too much heat and dryness extracts the natural oils, leading to irreversible dry rot.
• The Alchemy: Store your goods in a climate-controlled room (like a bedroom closet) away from direct sunlight. If your closet is naturally damp, toss a few silica gel packets inside your stored bags.

Before you zip that garment bag for the summer, do this quick 3-step ritual:
• Empty the Pockets: Heavy keys or coins left in pockets for months will permanently stretch and deform leather.
• Give it a Wipe down: Dust attracts moisture. Give the piece a quick wipe with a dry microfiber cloth before storing.
• Don’t Over-Condition: Never slather leather in heavy conditioner right before locking it away in the dark. That’s just a buffet line for mold.
